Letting go of your things and clearing your mind -Hacking Parenthood

The more I let go the more I can’t remember what I was holding onto.

For my regular readers you know I have been on a journey of minimalism. This means going through my things and letting go of the unnecessary. I started my journey when I learnt about Kon Mari. Only keep things that bring you joy. This helped me begin to let go of items that weren’t giving me happiness. Here’s my take on the difference between minimalism and KonMari

I let go a lot of things that I was carrying around since university. Keeping them thinking that if I don’t, I will forget those memories. The thing that we forget is there are many other ways to remember.

After spending a year going through my things I watched a documentary about minimalism. This pushed me even further to refine and edit what I have to the minimum of what my mind needed.

The things I have around me now fills me with joy and happy memories. I don’t have much, but what I have brings me happiness. I think the fact that I don’t have much also bring me happiness.

I look back at all the things I have given away and I don’t miss any of it. It was almost like it was a burden to carry around. It was also very cluttered. I knew how to give everything I had a place but it was just too much. Too much for my mind. My journey has made me come to the realisation about materialistic items and why we don’t need almost all of it.

I look back at all the things I have given away and I don’t miss any of it.

I know I am going to the extreme but because we are beginning our adventure of long-term travel, we’ve had to downsize even more than a normal minimalistic household. We will have a few things packed in a couple of boxes f the r family to keep and the rest of our things will be in 2 backpacks ready for travel.

My only thoughts of all the things I have let go is, wow! Look what I can do now that I have let go.

Letting go of material things can really help your mind let go of other things. This in turn help you fill it with joy and happiness.

A few tips on other ways that you can remember things.

  • Take photos of the item and make a note of the image when it is saved.
  • Have a diary of all the memories that that item reminds you of.
  • Sell it to make a little money to create new memories and write about them.
  • If you don’t want to keep a diary, start a personal blog that no one reads to fill in your thoughts, one day when you are ready you can print all your stories into a memories booklet.

If you don’t believe me, then try it yourself. See what happens.
